Kitchen kit: update
So, please try not to think mean things about how fat I am here... I really do look like Princess Beatrice pre-diet. That double chin! Although I've possibly always had one. I swear to God, when this kid is out, I am going to STARVE myself. I will of course lie, though, and say that the weight just "fell off".
Anyway this is 10 minutes long and quite boring. But's it's semi-amusing when I start to get really bad reflux half-way in. And yes, I know that there's a knife-sharpener swinging away like a pendulum in the background - but what can I say? I can't imagine that what you're most looking for from me is razor-sharp professionalism. At least, I hope not.

So eloquent! Was that rehearsed or totes off the cuff?
ReplyDeleteO you know darling, just off the top of my head. But I do say "so there you go" and "inclined" about six times each so... not that eloquent. Forgot to turn to the side so everyone can see how massively preggo I am. But might put everyone off their KitKats.
ReplyDeleteBravo! I have all of the tools that you presented except one and you've convinced me to get the lemon squeezer! Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteWow!! Thanks so much for the video post- what a treat. Love all your recommendations; have jotted a few things down on my shopping list (really need to get that cooling rack..) and will try best to not get sucked in by pretty frivolous things. Super informative post! Also, you are looking fabulous & glowy.
ReplyDeleteI've got that lemon squeezer, and it IS brilliant. Knocks spots off Nigella's (which is blunt and hopeless).
ReplyDeleteWell, still very composed. You should have heard Ian Bell talking about the cricket yesterday. I swear the man said 'you know' 40 times.
ReplyDeleteIt is your fault that I am browsing le creuset steamers on a Friday night. Enjoyed the post though. Thanks
ReplyDeleteThank you for the silicone cake case advice, I've admired them from afar for ages but I won't bother getting them now. I have the same problem squeezing lemons so I'll be putting that squeezer on my list. Thanks for doing this vid, you look beautiful by the way. x
ReplyDeleteI'd be tempted to use the silicone cases for ice cubes. One massive ice cube should last for 5 or 6 vodka tonics, surely. Have just discovered your blog, and am smitten with your recipes and your witty banter. It really takes the edge off the daily "I quit I quit I quit" drafts, to my boss on my phone in the toilets at work.
ReplyDeleteJust quit. Do it. Something else will come along. If it's got to the stage where you're doing the I quit I quit I quit in the loos thing, it's time... to quit.
ReplyDeleteYou're totally right - silicone cases are impossible to clean. Mine are constantly greasy however many times I wash them.
ReplyDeleteI'd never thought of using them for ice instead. Do you think they'd be OK for freezing baby food?
x
Aww I saw a picture of you in your husband's column in the DM. Looking radiant, and the piece was beautiful too... brought a little tear to my eye!
ReplyDeleteI can't, I have a child (fine artist husband) to support as well as many other excuses. As soon as MTV pick up my ideas for a show where they follow me around at work, crying in the toilets etc, I have to continue to do all that and my lite-admin. Also, the jobcentre scares me.
ReplyDeleteLove the video! I have to say I love my magimix food processor. It was definitely the most expensive item in my kitchen and money well spent (the husband may disagree though judging by his ever increasing waist line). Is it sad that I get a little kick seeing chefs on TV using magimix processors too?
ReplyDeleteI need to get a lemon squeezer thing as I can never get enough juice out of it; yet Jamie O does make it look so easy... And, if anyone's thinking about buying a juicer don't do it! It was great initially but now that my brief health kick is over it's just gathering dust in our cramped little kitchen.
Hope you're having a great weekend! x
That was great, very useful - thank you. I've always shied away from a mandoline as they look fearsomely dangerous and I worry about slicing off a digit. Does it have something to protect your fingers?
ReplyDeleteYes, it does have a handle-thing with spikes in it that you jam into whatever you're slicing and whiz it up and down. Like with all things in a kitchen - boiling pans, gas rings, Global knives etc - you have to exercise a fair amount of caution, but I'd also say you'd be really quite unlucky if you did yourself.
ReplyDeleteAnd the potato dauphinoise would be worth it.
Great post. If anyone is hesitating over a Le Creuset casserole, my two are 28 years old and still fine. I burnt the shank/wooden arm of an LeC saucepan but found a man on ebay who makes oak/sycamore/elm replacements.
ReplyDeleteIf you cut a lemon in half and blast it in the microwave for 10 seconds, then you are able to squeeze nearly every last drop out of the lemon with absolutely minimum effort. Brilliant top tip courtesy of Morrisons magazine circa 2004!
ReplyDeleteI am now forwarding this blog post to my erstwhile older brothers so they can STOP BUYING ME USELESS KITCHEN CRAP FOR XMAS (rant over). Also that lemon thing you couldn't get the name of is called a 'reemer' (think thats the spelling i'm a bit shit at that).
ReplyDeleteI commented on this a while ago but hadn't actually watched the video (I was at work or something). Anyway, brilliant video, containing all the things I am coveting and those that I want but agree with you and don't need. It is worth mentioning the term 'Sabatier' as it can be misleading when purchasing knives. Sabatier is a process rather than a brand, it's to do with the way the knife is made (from a single piece of metal)... this means that if a knife says Sabatier on it, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a good one. Some Sabatier knives are excellent, some are not. I remember being very pleased with myself for buying a Sabatier bread knife before I knew this. Having said that, I am looking for some decent knives (ours are actually hazardous) and so might take a look at Global ones. Thanks :)
