March cold cure-all

Everyone seems to be ill at the moment, except me. So I thought I'd post a reminder to everyone that the best cure for a nasty cold is a hot toddy and 12 hours in bed.

This is how my mum used to make them for me. (That is my mum, above, in the pink Crocs).

Take:
1 bottle whisky
1 lemon
1 bowl sugar
1 hot kettle, about 5 mins off the boil
1 mug or glass

Stand next to the kettle and surround yourself with the ingredients. Start with a finger of whisky and half a spoonful of sugar, a squeeze of lemon and a slug of hot water.

Mix artistically. Taste gingerly. Add ingredients as neccessary until you have something hot, sweet and lemony with a boozy kick.

Whether or not you choose to take two painkillers of your choosing with this is entirely up to you. Obviously, I would never recommend mixing painkillers with alcohol, because it is dangerous.

Anyway, drink this and then go to bed for 12 hours. Everyone always laughs at me and calls me a weakling when I go to bed as soon as I've got a sore throat but my great Uncle Jim always did it and he was in the army and lived until he was 100, so if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me. And you.

  1. A few cloves and a bit of cinnamon stick in the hot water are quite good too. Take them out before adding whisky ... etc though. No one needs to swallow a hot clove.

  2. Bleurgh, quite right about the clove. I swallowed one at Christmas by mistake and it was absolutely horrible. But top tip - thanks xxxx

  4. Loving Flo's work -- the new features on the blog are great. I'm sure you'll be an internet sensation in no time, and then I can feel all smug knowing I was a relatively "early adopter" :)

I had an AWFUL cold last week that took me out of work for 2 days, and not even in an enjoyable, Ferris Bueller duvet-day way -- I was sneezing and coughing too much to appreciate daytime tv or even sleep! I found some solace in dozens of hot toddys (sans whisky -- maybe adding some booze would have meant a speedier recovery).

Really enjoy reading your blog, look forward to hearing more about your cooking/diet attemps ahead of your wedding!

  5. Leila! Bless your heart, what lovely things to say.

Yes, sometimes having a cold just makes you depressed - like: what's the point of life?? depressed - and it's not remotely enjoyable.

I advocated booze as a cure for everything far too much, I think. My old English teacher used to call it the "Two hat" cure - i.e. you go to bed with a bottle of whisky and one hat and you drink until there are two. Then you go to sleep. xxxx

  6. Then, presumably, you can use the hat as a handy vomit receptacle in the morning. Genius! xx
