Hugh's Mango and Steak salad-thing

How utterly utterly ridiculous of me to flag up Hugh FW's wonderful-sounding mango and steak salad thing and then wander off and not make it, like the fool I am. I haven't made it yet because a) it's raining and b) my car has broken down and c) I keep getting drunk and being really hungover the next day, which makes me really really not want to put on my welly boots and walk to Sainsbury's in Camden Town. I am scared of the Camden Town Sainsbury's. It's the place where all the crazy people in North London like to hang out.
But people quite rightly want to make this damned thing now, so I thought I'd post up the recipe, untested. It looks pretty straightforward and if anyone wants to try it out and email me what they think about it I'll post it up here. And then one day, when my car is fixed, I might make it for myself.

So, it's Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall recipe for Mango, Avocado and Steak Salad from p. 57 of Saturday's Guardian Magazine and available here:

N.B. I did make this in the end and it went really well. Easy and yummy. The only thing I would say is that there is WAY too much garlic (unless you're a real garlic fiend). There was so much that it kept waking me up in the middle of the night. If I was going to make this again, I'd halve the quantities all round - maybe leave the raw stuff out of the dressing altogether.

    I thought that I was the only one. Don't blame yourself, blame the booze. It sneaks up on you. haha.

  2. ha ha! but it's awful isn't it... like I'm some terrible lush. I've got alcoholic aunts on both sides of my family though so it's NOT ME IT'S MY DNA!

  3. It does seem fairly easy (bookmarks it for later use), but I have my plans for tonight already - Nigel Slater's roast chicken and couscous and orange thing.

  5. made the salad, except we forgot to get a "ripe" mango and Tesco delivered something that we could have rolled down a bowling alley, it was so hard. A ripe melon (can't remember its name but it had orange flesh) replaced it and it worked really well. The marinade is lovely but there's either too much fish sauce in the dressing recipe or I wasnt paying attention when I poured ( bleauuurrgh). Oh and I forgot to add the coriander. Pretty much a different dish, then.

  6. Christy that made me laugh a LOT. I was actually thinking to myself that that's the trouble with this thing: a ripe mango. The chances of getting a ripe one are quite slim (esp if having delivered) and then, what, you have to hang around waiting for it to ripen? By then you'll have forgotten about the salad & put the steak in something else and just eat the mango at 6.30pm having returned home from work hungry.

    But it sounds like it went okay? Apart from the fish sauce, which can be a bit overwhelming, I agree.
